Christie Baker

Artist member since 2025
Toronto, Ontario

Christie Baker is a self-taught Canadian painter whose work explores memory, material, and the quiet significance of everyday objects. Influenced by vintage interiors, aged textiles, wildflowers, and botanicals, her paintings reflect a deep appreciation for the handmade and the emotional resonance of the things we choose to keep. Born in Edmonton and raised in Calgary, Ottawa, and Toronto, Christie spent many years in Vancouver raising her family before returning to Toronto in 2019. She began painting in her 50s during the uncertainty of the pandemic, discovering a deeply personal, intuitive form of expression. A published writer of creative non-fiction with a professional background in beauty and fashion, Christie brings a strong sense narrative and appreciation for aesthetics to her visual art. Each work she creates carries the imprint of memory and heritage, inviting viewers to pause, reflect, and find joy in the objects and moments from the past that shape who we are.

Inside the Studio

Q+A

When did you start making art, and why?

I painted an oil painting once in my teens. I painted another one in my mid-twenties. I started to paint regularly in my fifties. I always knew art was a part of my path, I just needed to meander my way towards to it. In 2019, my husband and I relocated from Vancouver to Toronto, just before the lock-down of 2020. Being in a new city, away from family and friends, with no where to go, seemed like the perfect time to embrace art.

Favourite medium

I currently adore working with acrylic paint combined with mixed media such as ink, graphite, pastels, etc. Oil paints were my first my love, but the immediacy of acrylics suits my practice better these days.

Which piece of art you've created is your favourite, and why?

This is such a tough question. I think I always love my most recent work best. Right now, that is my collection 'Vessels'. I feel innately connected to the subject matter, and the work comes naturally.

Describe the person your work appeals to in 3 words

My work appeals to people who aren't afraid of colour and who don't take art too seriously. My work is based on a deep emotional connection to my subject matter, and I hope viewers feel that, but there is not a lot of angst.

Beverage of choice

Coffee and Sancerre (but not together).

When I'm not making art, I'm (a) ...

Cooking, gardening, buying vintage finds to inspire me, and spending time with family.
